What is hypothyroidism?

Ang thyroid gland ay isang butterfly-shaped organ na matatagpuan sa ating leeg. Its primary function is to produce the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) na nakakaapekto sa ating metabolism. In some cases, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, and this condition is known as hypothyroidism.
Without sufficient thyroid hormones in our body, our metabolism and other body functions slow down. Thus, a patient with hypothyroidism may experience a variety of symptoms tulad ng pagkapagod, pagtaas ng timbang, pagiging ginawin, panghihina at pagsakit ng muscles, hirap sa pagdumi, at iba pa.
Maraming posibleng sanhi ang hypothyroidism. Most of the time, it is a complication caused by procedures done to the thyroid gland such as thyroidectomy (pagtanggal ng buong thyroid gland) and radioactive iodine therapy. These treatments are often used for hyperthyroidism or thyroid cancer. Hypothyroidism can also be caused by autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s disease. In this case, our immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland kung kaya’t nagiging underactive ito. Iodine deficiency can also cause hypothyroidism, and there are also drugs that inhibit the production of thyroid hormones such as amiodarone, propylthiouracil (PTU), methimazole, and lithium.
How to treat hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism can be managed by replacing the hormones that your thyroid gland cannot produce. This is done by taking levothyroxine – a synthetic version of thyroid hormones. Sa pamamagitan ng pag-inom ng levothyroxine, nabibigay natin sa ating katawan ang thyroid hormones na kailangan nito upang mag-function normally. However, it is important to note that treatment for hypothyroidism is lifelong.
The dosage of levothyroxine varies from person to person as it depends on the patient’s needs and the severity of their condition. In general, mababa ang dosage na ibinibigay sa pasyente sa simula ng gamutan, and this is eventually adjusted based on the patient’s blood tests and symptoms. Thus, it might take some time to determine the right dosage for a patient.
Hypothyroidism Medicine Side Effects

Over time, maaari pa ring magbago ang dosage ng levothyroxine para sa isang pasyente. This is why regular health checks with your physician is also important, lalo na’t maaaring magdulot ng side effects ang maling dosage ng levothyroxine. Some of the common side effects that result from excess dosage of levothyroxine, mimic manifestations of hyperthyroidism, and include:
- Change in appetite
- Weight loss
- Heat sensitivity
- Sweating
- Chest pain
- Headache
- Anxiety
- Mood swings
- Tiredness
- Muscle weakness
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Changes in menstrual periods
- Temporary hair loss
The above-mentioned side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own in a few days. However, if these side effects persist or worsen, it is best to consult with a health professional to ensure that your dosage is accurate and updated. Levothyroxine may also cause adverse side effects that require immediate care, katulad ng mabilis na heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, and worse, heart attack or heart failure.
