Valproic Acid (DEPAMAX®) SYRUP

What is Depamax® syrup used for? 

Valproic acid (Depamax®) is used as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy for complex partial seizures either in isolation or in association with other types of seizures. It is also used to treat simple and complex absence seizures including other multiple seizure types.

How much and how often should Depamax® be taken?

Valproic acid (Depamax®) 250 mg / 5 mL syrup is intended for oral administration. For complex partial seizures in adults and children at 10 years of age or older: As monotherapy or adjunctive therapy, it is given at 10 – 15 mg/kg/day up to below 60 mg/kg/day. For simple and complex absence seizures, the recommended initial dose is 15 mg/kg/day up to a maximum of 60 mg/kg/day. Total doses exceeding 250 mg, should be given in divided doses. Reduce dose in elderly patients

Depamax® is valproic acid 250 mg / 5 mL syrups available in 100 mL bottle in box of 1’s and 120 mL bottle in box of 1’s.

What are the possible side effects of Depamax®?

Depamax® may cause sedative effects, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, skin rash, photosensitivity, transient hair loss, emotional upset, depression, psychosis, abnormal behavior, weakness, thrombocytopenia, insulin resistance, renal failure, urinary tract infection and hearing loss among others.
