The Case of Levothyroxine Tablets in Blister Packaging versus Levothyroxine in Bottles and Vials

Hypothyroidism is a medical condition caused by an underactive thyroid gland that produces insufficient thyroid hormones. Once a patient is diagnosed with hypothyroidism, habambuhay na ang gamutan nito.

In most cases, hypothyroidism is treated by giving your body the missing thyroid hormones it needs. This is done by taking a medication called levothyroxine, which is usually in tablet form. Ang gamot na ito ay tumatayong replacement o supplement sa kulang na thyroid hormones sa ating katawan. Other levothyroxine uses include treatment of goiter and several types of thyroid cancer.

Levothyroxine is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a narrow therapeutic index (NTI) drug na nangangahulugang ang kaunting pagkakamali sa dosage nito ay maaaring magdulot ng masamang epekto. Thus, the FDA recommended that they must retain between 95 to 105% potency before their expiration date to preserve levothyroxine medication effectiveness and to avoid adverse effects.

In relation to this, a research published in 2022 investigated how various packaging influences the physical integrity and efficacy of levothyroxine by simulating patient use. This study showed that levothyroxine in bottles and vials is more prone to physical degradation dahil sa frequent exposure nito sa moisture at light. Moreover, their potency decreases over time.

On the other hand, blister packaging provides levothyroxine better protection from moisture and light. Sa pag-aaral na ito, the physical properties and potency of levothyroxine in blister packaging remained largely unchanged.

Thydin® is a levothyroxine tablet primarily used for the treatment of hypothyroidism. It is available in the following dosage strengths: 12.5 mcg tablet, 25 mcg tablet, 50 mcg tablet, 100 mcg tablet, and 150 mcg tablet. All dosage strengths can be purchased in blister packs of 10’s in a box of 100’s. With its blister packaging, the tablet’s stability and potency are preserved, kung kaya’t siguradong makukuha mo ang todo arugang kailangan mo.

It is important to note that levothyroxine dosage varies from person to person, as it is dependent on the patient’s symptoms, hormone levels, age, and other health conditions. Maaaring magbago ang dosage nito ayon sa pangangailangan ng pasyente.

Levothyroxine, like other medications, may have side effects. Levothyroxine side effects are mostly linked to excessive dosage and symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Some of its common side effects are weight loss, heat sensitivity, perspiration, headache, anxiety, irritability, tiredness, trouble sleeping, changes in menstrual periods, diarrhea, and vomiting. Thus, it is also important to schedule regular health checks with your attending physician upang masiguro na updated at tama ang dosage na iyong iniinom.
